For the past 2 weeks, the Black Lives Matter movement and the revolution toward racial equality has gotten stronger by the second. An insane amount of celebrities and even huge companies like Coca Cola and Lego have taken part in speaking out against racial injustice.
On June 7th, Bachelor Nation alum Catherine Giudici-Lowe posted throwback pictures of her time at the Bachelor mansion where she met her now husband Sean Lowe. While announcing to her followers of Sean's season finally airing on Netflix, she also reflected on her time being a person of colour vying for his heart on prime time TV.
She posts: "When I was originally cast, I was very flattered but somewhat grounded by the fact that I would be one of the faces that represented people of colour. I knew that one of the reasons I was probably chosen was because I was Filipino. I counted myself out to be his fiancee because of what I assumed Sean liked. I thought I was there just to check a box, but I ended up with so much more. I became present with the process and as he started noticing me for who I really was, I was allowed this experience to open myself up to the possibility of being fully loved and appreciated for all that I was. I ended up getting to represent a mixed race community, I found Christ (I LOVE my testimony!) and marrying the most amazing man I've ever known. I'd say doing this show was one of the best things that ever happened to me. (Don't count yourself out. You are destined to do bigger things than just check a box.)"
When I saw this post, I felt so enlightened by the fact that someone was finally voicing how women of colour feel in a society that only seems to recognize fair-skinned beauty. I too am currently in a mixed race relationship, where I also have moments of feeling like the odd one out, where I question my worth, and where I've even compared myself to lighter-skinned females.
Catherine's post gives a sense of direction of what the future could be when we as a society learn to see past someone's outer appearance. Because she got the happy ending she deserved, it furthers that aspiration of how beautiful it can be when we learn to love people for who they truly are.
