Rosemarie Vega Destroys The "Submissive Asian Woman" Stereotype on 90 Day Fiance: Before The 90 Days

Updated: Feb 3, 2021

Once upon a time, Rosemarie Vega fell in love with a man who was twice her age online, she didn't mind their age gap because he treated her with respect, and it seemed like he could be a good dad to her son and the 2 children she planned to conceive with this man who was secretly going to get a vasectomy later down the road.

In the latest episode of TLC's hit reality series/guilty pleasure of mine,"90 Day Fiance: Before The 90 Days", while taking a trip to Palawan in the Philippines, Rosemarie's boyfriend "Big Ed" reveals that he plans on getting a vasectomy when he goes back to America as he no longer wants to have anymore children. She reacted with complete shock and kept asking him why he didn't tell her sooner.

During their heated confrontation before she leaves him for good, Big Ed was over here playing the victim to make it seem like Rose was the crazy one trying to voice her opinion like the strong independent woman she is (typical dude move), but all this woman was trying to get down to the bottom of is "why did you waste my time and my feelings fam?". The things she said to Ed were all solid points, she communicated how she felt irritated and disappointed because she's mentioned her plans to have 2 more children multiple times to him, she then asks him why he didn't tell her the truth before he even booked a trip to the Philippines to meet her, he then responds by directing the reason to his age (like that's a valid enough point), Rose then hits back and keeps pressing on why he didn't tell her on the very first day they chatted online, Ed somewhat says an okay response to her question by apologizing for not being man enough to have been upfront with her.

She continues to call him out on the times he's made her feel lesser than or deceived. His height, his request for an STD test on the first night they were together, and him suggesting she's got to brush her teeth more even though she has a condition that makes her have that bad breath even after she's already brushed her teeth.

Rose then goes back to her room after Ed storms out like the diva he is, and says something that gave me more respect for her than I did already, she says "I feel hurt and I feel sad because Ed cannot accept his own mistakes", she then ends it off with explaining that she realized she liked the online Ed more than the real life one because he respected her rather than made her feel indifferent.

I admit, at first I believed the story line of Rosemarie being that Filipino girl who's only with Ed for his money. But as the episodes progressed, you could really see her genuine effort of giving this guy a chance.

Overall throughout the series, I love how Rosemarie doesn't hold back when it comes to speaking the truth, I love how unapologetic she is with her actions and decisions, and I love how she's basically challenged how western men view foreign women, especially Asian women as the submissive type. By repeatedly standing up for herself in every episode, she has truly embodied how Asian women can do more than just cook and clean, but also have the ability to stand up for themselves when the situation requires them to.
